Self-discipline- Quick Guide to what it is and How to start


I saw this quote, and it hit me right between the eyes, because of containing     

so much truth in a nutshell:

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control your thoughts. You cannot control your body”


 The Holy Spirit started to show me again how motivational speakers and business teachers use    the word: “self-discipline”.

They all say that self-discipline is the key “act” to reaching your goals and make your dreams a reality.

Most teachers refer to self-discipline as the price and pain that you pay willingly to become successful.

What is self-discipline?

Self-discipline is what you need to do.  An act: not necessarily what you want to do, but you know it is necessary for future success.  It is the act to willingly, sacrifice your comfort zone, laziness, the excuses, and to work on the changing of your                                                mindset.

Actions/ habits to build self-discipline

  • The getting up early in the morning to exercise,
  • To make time for prayer, to connect with God
  • Healthy eating
  • A deliberate choice to train your brain, to change your mindset, your way of                                                 thinking
  • Being determined, & convincing yourself that success awaits you till you believe it with all your heart, mind & soul
  • Lastly, to choose to act on, to work, on settling these new habits permanently into your DNA.


The Holy Spirit then reminded me on the DVD called “The Secret” & how they referred to visualization, which is to see you achieving your goal, to “feel” it and to believe for it, till it manifests. To call that which is not, till it is.

“Now faith is the assurance of things (we) hope for (the title deed, the conviction), being the proof of things (we) do not see and the conviction of their reality (faith perceiving as real fact, what is not revealed to the senses)

I was shown the same with the gratitude stones, where people got healed. The speaker would use his stone as a reminder to be thankful every morning, to count his blessings and to ponder on the things that he is grateful for. This comes down to the power of thankfulness, which creates joy, healing & peace.

Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Nehemiah 8:10 which reads: And do not be worried, for the joy of the LORD is your strength and your stronghold.”


Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Now with all the above evidence as proof that the principles being taught by motivational speakers and business teachers, are principles spoken of in the Bible.  The Holy Spirit then stated that He was going to show me something new, He was going to show me where “self-discipline” originated from.  

I was intrigued, waiting to see what was going to be revealed to me.

He then said:

“The word self-discipline used to be called something else

” I thought to myself, what could it have been before?

Then the statement came: “It used to be called: Resist the devil.”

I was stunned. It made perfect sense.


Let us go look at the ancient scriptures of the Bible & see what it says about resisting the devil.

James 4: 7 so submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you.”

2 Corinthians 10: 5. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”

Philippians 4: 8 “ Whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things.

 I went and  compared theses verses with the teachings of different motivational speakers and business teachers, like the following examples:

  • Think positive,
  • Train your brain to stay positive,
  • See the silver lining,
  • Stop listening to your thoughts that brings you down.
  • Stop listening to poisonous thoughts that keeps on telling you that you cannot achieve it and that you are not worthy, because you are sabotaging yourself.

All of this brought me to the conclusion, that everything that is standing in your way to a successful life, where success is something different to each person, but that all success in life, can be achieved via Self-discipline, or now also known as “resist the devil”.


The Holy Spirit was successful in proving to me, that all successful business owners, are actually following biblical principals.

Biblical principals were given by God the Creator, whom created the universal laws  before the foundation of the world, thus, if you know how to activate the universal             laws in your favor, you will be blessed.

No wonder successful people prosper


How do you grow your self-discipline (how do you resist the devil)?

I have learnt: that Choice not chance determines your destiny.

That you are the master of your own destiny.

 Is that not what we are trying to do?

 To change an unwanted inevitable future into a better one?

Thus, it is obvious now, that all success starts with a choice. 

I can also state with confidence that you need to making a conscious choice to stop listening to those negative thoughts.


This is now where you need to start taking action. . 

 2 Corinthians 10:5: “I take my thoughts   captive to the obedience in Christ”

You will need to speak those words out quite a few times a day, especially in the beginning, that was what I found when I started to change my future.

You will need to start to counter negative thoughts by replacing them with new positive thoughts.  I started by writing down affirmations and reading them and speaking them repeatedly.



All of these sayings, came from people whom must have  had revelations from God on                               the power of thoughts and that the battlefield, is in the mind, and that self- discipline is needed to taming your thoughts.




I was still busy waking up when the Holy Spirit spoke to me
He started to show me again how motivational speakers and business men make use of the words: “self-discipline”. The key act to reach your goals and make your dreams a reality.
Most motivational speakers and business people refer to self-discipline as the price and pain that you pay willingly to become successful.
